Joshua Tree Gathering
March 16-18, 2012

Pinto Basin, Joahua Tree National Park, California

The annual Joshua Tree Gathering is an opportunity to get away for a weekend and enjoy the fascinating beauty of Joshua Tree National Park here in Southern California.  Besides the Dr Seuss-like Joshua Trees for which the park is named, the park offers photographic opportunities that range from endlessly fascinating rock formations to unparalleled desert vistas.  Besides its natural beauty, the park is richly flavored with a human history that includes the Serrano Indians, mining and murder, ranching and rustling.

What to expect

We will camp in the group campsite at Cottonwood Campground near the southern entrance to the park.   Those who tent camp can stay in the group site.  Those who have RVs can get a spot in the regular campsite nearby.  The weekend will be filled with fun, fellowship and fotography.  Not to mention the good food of course.

Itinerary

Friday night is informal as people arrive and get their campsites set up.  Everyone brings snacks and we sit around talking photography, making new friends and catching up with old.

We get Saturday off to an excellent start with a sunrise shoot nearby and we'll continue shooting throughout the morning.  Early Saturday afternoon we'll have some presentations back in camp.  I try to find an interesting and inspirational guest artist to show and discuss his or her work.  The rest of Saturday afternoon is filled with hikes or just exploring the park.  Saturday night is the famous potluck dinner where we all show off our outdoor cooking prowess.

Sunday morning it's time for another early rise to catch another pristine desert sunrise.  The rest of the day is pretty informal with people getting a bit more shooting in, breaking camp and heading back home.

All meals and transportation are up to each participant.  As I mentioned, we'll have a pot luck dinner Saturday night.  This is always a great treat.  The tent campers can camp in the group site.  The spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.  RV campers and any overflow tent campers can camp in the regular sites, just 2 minute walk away.

Cottonwood is an especially nice campground.  The group facilities are first class and, unlike the other campgrounds in Joshua Tree, we have running water and flush toilets.  So by Joshua Tree standards, it's really deluxe

Because we are limited in the number of people who can attend everyone attending needs to send in a registration form and sign an assumption of risk form.  To download the forms click the Sign Me Up button below

We offer a nice variety of photography workshops in beautiful locations throughout the Southwest.  For a rich photographic experience with an emphasis on great photography,  personal attention and both technical and creative growth come on out and join us.
