Eastern Sierra
The Owens River Valley extends north
flanked on the east by the Inyo and White Mountains,
impressive by any standards. But to the west the
crest of the Sierra Nevada juts almost straight up,
towering a vertical two miles above the travelers'
heads. North of Bishop the river valley climbs to
Long Valley and Lake Crowley. Further north still
are the Mono Craters and beautiful Mono Lake.
There and many other enticements await the photographer
in the Eastern Sierra photography workshop.
Mt Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48, towers
above the town of Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills.
Glacier-carved valleys with dancing streams and placid
lakes wend their way up into the mountains.
Ancient Bristlecone Pines, the oldest living things on
the planet, thrive in the harsh conditions of the White
Mountains.
This photography workshop is being
held in spring and early summer, an
incredible time of year to be in the Sierra Nevada
Mountains. Snows
still cap the peaks but the life-giving hand of spring
is touching the aspen and willows in the valleys.
The temperatures are perfect and the possibility of a
spring storm holds out the prospect of dramatic
photography.
The Eastern Sierra and the valley to
the east have been shaped by geological processes, the
most dramatic occurring in the last 7 million years.
During that time the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains
lifted to their towering height and glaciers carved the
valleys giving them the breathtaking spectacle we so
enjoy today.
