Eastern Sierra

The Owens River Valley extends north flanked on the east by the Inyo and White Mountains, impressive by any standards.  But to the west the crest of the Sierra Nevada juts almost straight up, towering a vertical two miles above the travelers' heads.  North of Bishop the river valley climbs to Long Valley and Lake Crowley.  Further north still are the Mono Craters and beautiful Mono Lake.  There and many other enticements await the photographer in the Eastern Sierra photography workshop.  Mt Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48, towers above the town of Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills.  Glacier-carved valleys with dancing streams and placid lakes wend their way up into the mountains.  Ancient Bristlecone Pines, the oldest living things on the planet, thrive in the harsh conditions of the White Mountains.

This photography workshop is being held in spring and early summer, an incredible time of year to be in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Snows still cap the peaks but the life-giving hand of spring is touching the aspen and willows in the valleys.  The temperatures are perfect and the possibility of a spring storm holds out the prospect of dramatic photography.

The Eastern Sierra and the valley to the east have been shaped by geological processes, the most dramatic occurring in the last 7 million years.  During that time the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains lifted to their towering height and glaciers carved the valleys giving them the breathtaking spectacle we so enjoy today.

Join Ralph Nordstrom for a five day photography workshop that focuses on exploring and photographing the grand and intimate beauty of the Eastern Sierra.  Ralph is an award winning photographer, long time professional educator and experienced workshop leader.  He leads workshops in the American West and Europe.  His work can be seen at http://RalphNordstromPhotography.com.

Ralph brings his intimate knowledge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to provide a photography workshop experiences that places you at the spectacular locations in the best light.  Ralph also provides personal, one-on-one coaching to the extent desired.  Get experience with such technical and creative challenges as mastering exposure, focus, composition, light, creative techniques and more.

Our Philosophy

Our workshops emphasize exciting photography and personal attention.  You will get as much or as little one-on-one attention as you desire.   You will have assignments that teach and reinforce the principles of great landscape photography.

We will cover various topics during the workshop such as mastering exposure in difficult lighting situations, composition and light, advanced techniques and techniques for expanding our creativity.

One very popular feature is the print review.  In addition to reviewing the images you capture during the workshop, you are invited to bring up to six prints of your work for review and comments by the instructor.  The prints should be 8X10 or larger.  All reviews provide supportive and constructive feedback.  Participation is totally voluntary.

Our goal is for you to leave the workshop with some great photographs and feel you have grown as a photographer.
