  • Zabriskie Point

  • Artists Pallet

  • Badwater

  • Dante's View

  • Racetrack

  • Stovepipe Dunes

  • Devil's Golf Course

  • Devil's Corn Field

  • Mosaic Canyon

  • and more....

Location

Death Valley National Park, Stovepipe Wells, California

Who Should Attend?

The workshop is open to photographers with a basic understanding of camera operations.  If you have a passion for the out of doors, a love for one of the most amazing and beautiful deserts in California, a keen desire to grow as a photographer and a drive to create beautiful photographs will find this workshop meets all of your expectations.

Maximum Workshop Size

Attendance will be limited to 12 so that the experience will be personal and intense.

Theme

The theme for the workshop is "The Photographer as Artist."  We will explore photography as a fine art medium and what it means to be a fine art photographer.  We will discuss techniques used by fine art photographers both in the field and back home in their darkrooms.  There will be assignments each day to reinforce the topics we discuss.

We will also conduct a print review.  Participation is voluntary but if you care to participate bring 4 to 6 prints 8X10 or larger.

Schedule

Thursday, 10/30 - Meet on location two hours before sunset for a brief orientation and sunset shoot.

Friday, 10/31 - Sunrise to post-sunset

Saturday, 11/1- Sunrise to post-sunset

Sunday, 11/2 - Sunrise to 11 AM

A Typical Day

A typical day will begin with a sunrise shoot.  We'll usually arrive on site shortly after 5:00.  Mid-day activities will consist of lectures, print reviews, reviews of assignments and travel.  In mid-afternoon we'll arrive at our sunset location.  After shooting sunset we will relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for the next exciting day of shooting.

Logistics

Our base of operations will be Stovepipe Wells.  This is central to all of the great locations we will visit (if anything can be called 'central' in Death Valley).  You will be responsible for your own transportation, lodging, National Park fees and meals during the workshop.

For those flying in, the closest airport is in Las Vegas, NV.  Additional details regarding accommodations and transportation will be provided when you sign up.

Location Notes

Death Valley is a desert subject to extremes of temperature, winds and even precipitation.  We can expect the highs to range from 76 to 92.  The lows can range from 48 to 62.  Average precipitation for this time of year is about 0.15 inches per month.

The moon will be just coming out of the new moon phase so we can expect a crescent moon low in the western sky on Friday.

What to Bring

Here is a brief list of what to bring (a more comprehensive list will be provided when you sigh up):

  • SLR camera (digital or film)
  • Lenses (wide angle, normal and telephoto)
  • Tripod
  • Remote release
  • Warm clothing (layers are best)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Field notebook and pencil
  • Audio recording device (optional but highly recommended)

Cost

The cost of the workshop is $395 per person.  Please, no tab-alongs.  Everyone who attends must be a paid participant.  This helps ensure that all have a great experience.

Attendees will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.  To sigh up send me an email at Ralph@RalphNordstromPhotography.com.  Include a daytime phone number where you can be reached. I'll give you a call and take your credit card number over the phone.  Do not send your credit card number via email.
