Olmsted Point in the Yosemite
high country is understandably very popular.
It's a long drive from the Valley but well worth
it as it provides magnificent views of the
Tenaya Creek canyon and unique views of Clouds
Rest and the favorite, Half Dome. We
arrived from the other direction - Tioga Pass
and Tuolumne Meadows.
A weak storm front was
passing over the Sierras that afternoon.
It was a perfect time to be there. When we
first arrived the clouds were well overhead but
as the afternoon progressed and the sun settled
in the west the ceiling began to drop until we
found ourselves in and out of the chilly fog.
Images were popping up
everywhere and disappearing just as quickly. So we were
constantly turning and turning in an effort to not
miss anything. There was quite a bit of
waiting but when an image appeared we had to be
ready. We'd swing our cameras around,
quickly composed. focused and fire away.
Then it would be gone with no second chances.
Sierra Storm 2 was such an
image. An hole opened
briefly
in the
clouds, the disk of the sun was made partially
visible, it lasted for a few seconds and then
was gone. I was very fortunate to grab it.
Most of the
image's
mood was captured in the RAW file so no
extraordinary post processing was required.
The result is as dramatic and exciting as it was
actually being there.
