This photograph was one shot
on a workshop several years ago and one I just
didn't get around to. I'd decided I wanted
to work on it but other things always seemed to
get in the way. So it sat on the hard
drive month after month. Every once in a
while I'd see it and it would remind me that I
really liked it. And finally I decided to
put it at the top of the list. And I'm
glad I did.
There was nothing
particularly difficult about the capture in the
field. It was sunset and the sun had
already dropped behind the Panamint Range.
So the light from the west was warm, the hard
shadows of mid day were gone and all was soft
and quite.
It wasn't until I started
working on the image that I began to realize
some of the expressive potential. The
light made the image soft while the texture of
the mud stone gave it a fuzzy feel. It was
the baby blue in the upper right of the image
that first caught my imagination and prompted me
to think of a baby's blanket. It all came
together - the soft, fuzzy folds and the warm
pastel colors. I remembered with affection
when we wrapped our daughter in blankets much
like this and carried her about.
I hope this image conjures up
fond memories for you as it does for me.
