Spirit Tree(2010)
Lake Superior, Minnesota
In English this tree is
called the Witch Tree.
In Ojibwa it is called
Manidoo-giizhikens
or Little Cedar Spirit Tree and it is sacred.
Our Ojibwa host led us down the old path
in the dark through the thick forest to the
rocky cliff where the tree grows above the
water’s edge.
In the early dawn light we each made
offerings of tobacco to show our respect and
then we waited for the sun.
It rose above the waters in ancient
splendor and its golden light warmed our hearts.
