McWay Falls (2010)
Big Sur, California
The central California
coast plunges precipitously into the blue
Pacific.
Every few miles it is intersected by
steep gorges that cut sharply into the
mountains.
Many of these gorges have happy streams
and because of their steepness, graceful
waterfalls.
McWay creek flows through
the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, a quite
refuge a few miles down the coast from Big Sur.
Just a short walk in from the highway
through dark stands of towering coastal redwoods
and aromatic laurel waits this beautiful little
falls, tumbling down next to a massive redwood
tree.
It is a place to slow down and stop, a
place to be absorbed and savored. It's
like a journey back to Middle Earth where you
might expect to see Bilbo or Frodo pass by at
any moment. Or perhaps Legolas or even
Gandalf.
