Latourell Bridge (2008)
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Beautiful when it was new in 1914, this bridge over Latourell Creek has aged well. Rather than detracting from the unique beauty of the Columbia River Gorge, this bridge swathed with its garlands of moss and lichen is a pleasing accent to its picturesque surroundings.
The Historic Columbia River Highway, of which this bridge is a part, was the first scenic roadway in the United States. Designed by engineer and landscape architect Samuel C. Lancaster and built between 1913 and 1922, it demonstrates that human constructions can complement the natural splendors that surround them.
