Wild Irises (2009)
North Lake, Eastern Sierra, California
Barbed wire strung on rustic, weathered fence posts guard the lush meadow beyond. I don't know why it needs to be guarded. Maybe the packers turn their stock loose in it to graze. What I do know is the proud iris pays no mind to the offensive barbs. The fence post will eventually crumble and the wire disappear as rust. But every summer these irises will graciously adorn this meadow just like they have for 10,000 years.
