Tufa, Mono Lake (2010)
Eastern Sierra, California
For thousands of years, when Mono Lake
was much larger than it is, underwater springs
bubbled up on the lake bottom.
They carried small amounts of dissolved
calcium which reacted with the lake water to
form these amazing formations – grain by grain,
molecule by molecule.
Today the lake level is much lower,
exposing nature’s handiwork.
Sunrise at Mono
Lake is always thrilling
as the sun warms these forms with its golden
light.
With wonder and joy the new day begins.
