Alkali Pond (2011)
Eastern Sierra, California
Volcanoes, hot springs
and alkali ponds may not be the first thing that
comes to mind when someone mentions the Eastern
Sierra. But massive volcanoes play a huge
role in the geology of the Sierra around Mammoth
Lakes.
You can smell the sulfur
before you even see even these ponds. Just
before the sun comes up a breeze ruffles the
water and disturbs the perfect reflection.
But then it stops as abruptly as it started and
the surface re-mirrors. The sun grazes the
grass, the mountains glow, the moment is
perfect.
