Upper Antelope Canyon 2 (2006)
Lake Powell, Arizona
Antelope Canyon is on the Navajo reservation and
one of their sacred sites.
So it is with profound respect and
gratitude that one enters this shadowy domain.
We call it a slot canyon, a narrow canyon
carved by water over the millennia through a
layer of red Navajo sandstone.
In some places it is so narrow two people
cannot pass.
In other places the sun never reaches the
sandy floor from the open sky more than 50 feet
above.
Awe is what one
feels.
As I wandered these cool, twisted
passages I heard the gentle sounds of a Navajo
flute echoing off the walls.
In that brief time I connected in some
small way with the spirituality that engulfs
this shadowy yet uplifting place.
