Autumn Hanging Garden (2009)
Zion National Park, Utah
In the high country thousands
of feet above rain falls. Most of it runs
off to carve the canons large and small that
dominate Zion National Park. But some of
it seeps into the porous sandstone to begin its
dark journey deeper and deeper into the rock.
Down and down it percolates, inch by inch, for a
thousand feet and more. Eventually it
reaches a layer of rock that it cannot penetrate
and changes direction. Now it seeps
horizontally, inch by inch. Finally it
reaches the canyon walls where it drips back
into the light in a curtain of rain - Weeping
Rock.
With the abundance of fresh
pure spring water, delicate plants grow in the
cracks and crevasses of the rock. High
above our heads they cling to the nourishing
rock as if by magic. There they thrive.
We as visitors marvel at their strength,
endurance and fragile beauty.
